Located at the highest point of a large rural plot, by the village of Santa Gertrudis, is the ‘Ca na Maria’ villa. The plot divided into terraces by existing dry stone walls is covered with native vegetation, mainly pine forest. The single-family property, designed by architects Laura Torres Roa and Alfonso Miguel Caballero, blends into its environment as conections between the interiors and exteriors were given special consideration, offering family members the so desired “outdoor life".
The home is a single, rectangular structure of about 29x8x3.5m oriented to the southeast, looking outwards over the surrounding land. It is divided into four functional areas, organized in succession. Upon entrance, one steps into the kitchen. The cooking area is followed by a terrace and living room, library and bedrooms, and finally a guest room or home office space. Openings on both sides of the structure, holding enormous sliding doors are giving a double orientation to the living room, as it becomes an interior or exterior space depending on the moment. The guest room/office is partially separated from the main volume by a glass-enclosed cubic space, which allows light to enter the basement. White load bearing walls, ceramic and stone floors, wood window and door frames – local traditions merge with an elegant mediterranean style. The outward reaching concrete window frames, all of different proportions and sizes, appear laid out on a “disordered” pattern when observed from the exterior but they are actually looking for the "internal adjustment", as taking aligned positions in opposite facades to facilitate ventilation. The dash of blue colour, reminding of the windows of original fincas, frames the views and enhances the plasticity of the facade. The pool, placed on the prolongation of one of the stone walls, is separated from the house by a yard with native vegetation which is changing with the seasons.
