In a climate characterised by long, hot and dry summers, access to fresh water could determine the harvest, people\u2019s well-being and, in many cases, their very survival. Long before sustainability became a buzzword in design, rural Ibiza had already made it an everyday necessity. Much of Ibiza\u2019s history was shaped by the constant search for fresh water. The sea brought with it traders, invaders, salt, fish, pirates, sailors and stories of all kinds. However, in the island\u2019s interior, access to fresh water set the pace of daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The island\u2019s water-centred culture was not confined to a single period. It developed over the centuries, as each civilisation contributed its own relationship with the land, water and settlement. The Phoenicians, who founded Sa Caleta in the 8th century BC before moving on to the bay of Ibiza, integrated the island into a wider maritime and commercial world. Subsequently, the Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Catalan civilisations reshaped that same landscape without completely erasing what had come before them. Consequently, Ibiza\u2019s hydraulic systems should be interpreted less as the inventions of a single people and more as a long sequence of adaptations: marked and revered springs, deepened wells, refined cisterns, expanded terraces and irrigation channels organised according to the needs of each era. The traditional finca, so admired for its white cubic forms and its serene relationship with the land, was also a structure of climatic intelligence, shaped by necessity, patience and adaptation. Much of what is now perceived as beauty stems from adaptability and moderation: the ability to live with what the island provided and to waste nothing. Its roofs, courtyards, walls, terraces and vegetable gardens formed part of a practical system for surviving dry summers, unpredictable rainfall and limited fresh water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The traditional Ibizan farmhouse, also known as a \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelosa.com\/blog\/en\/architecture\/the-ibiza-finca-a-guide-to-ibizas-traditional-rural-home\/\">finca ibicenca<\/a><\/strong>\u2019, did not stand out in the landscape as a decorative feature. It formed part of a functional environment. Its roof collected rainwater, which was stored in its cistern. Its walls kept the house cool in summer and warm in winter. Its south-facing orientation followed the path of the sun and the wind. The terraces surrounding it retained the soil and moisture. The surrounding landscape was carefully analysed: where water might pool, where a well might be dug, where almond, fig or carob trees might thrive, where animals might find shelter, and where the soil would erode unless stones were laid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">An arid island with hidden water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The Mediterranean often conveys a misleading image of abundance. The blue sea, the open sky, the winter greenery and the bright summer light suggest a peaceful landscape. However, Ibiza\u2019s climate has always demanded adaptation. Rain could fall in heavy downpours and then disappear for long periods. Furthermore, the summer drought hardened the soil, put the vegetation to the test and meant that every liter stored counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The island\u2019s geology added another dimension to this story. Historically, Ibiza has relied on aquifers, springs, wells and rainfall. Groundwater has been one of the island\u2019s greatest resources, although it was never to be treated carelessly. The oldest estates were usually situated near wells, springs or land where water could be accessed, as the survival of a household depended on access to drinking water, both for people as well as for animals and crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible that this ancient geography of water dates back to the island\u2019s earliest historical settlers. For example, the local architect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelosa.com\/blog\/en\/architects\/rolph-blakstad-a-legacy-for-ibizan-architecture\/\">Rolph Blakstad<\/a><\/strong> pointed out that the Phoenicians, who settled in Ibiza in 654 BC, set up their first camps near natural springs, turning these places into centers for irrigation, gathering and trade. This detail is significant because it suggests a pattern that would persist over the following centuries: settlements followed the course of water rather than roads, views or property boundaries. Springs were first practical resources, then social and symbolic places, and finally architectural sites marked by arches, staircases and whitewashed chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship between surface aridity and groundwater determined the way in which people moved about, built their homes and cultivated the land. A well could determine the value of a plot of land; just as a spring could bring together families, animals and seasonal rituals. A cistern had to be capable of supplying a family during periods of drought. In this sense, Ibiza\u2019s traditional architecture began both underground and on the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the issue of water remains as relevant as ever. The island of the past and the modern island are linked by this same resource. Tourism, housing, swimming pools, gardens, agriculture and population growth have all led to a substantial increase in demand. Recent reports on Ibiza\u2019s water situation show how rainfall and groundwater reserves continue to fluctuate erratically from one year to the next, making water management a topical issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><br>The finca as a water-collecting house<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The traditional Ibizan farmhouse was originally built to serve as a shelter, a storehouse, thermal insulation and a water collection system. This is clearly evident in its architectural features: thick, whitewashed walls, flat roofs, compact forms, small windows and an irregular evolution over time. The architecture was modest, but its ingenuity was evident on many levels. What later generations would come to admire for its minimalism and purity began as a response to rural needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The traditional roof of an Ibizan farmhouse was a layered structure made from juniper wood, seagrass (<em>Posidonia<\/em>), clay and ash. These flat roofs were used both to dry fruit (figs, almonds, etc.) on dry days and to collect rainwater, which was then channelled into an underground cistern \u2013 the coolest spot the land had to offer. The cistern was concealed, cool and sheltered. In isolated homes, a cistern could mean the ability to withstand periods of drought. Furthermore, it reduced dependence on distant sources, which was important in a rural society characterized by scattered dwellings, limited roads and lifestyles verging on self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The thick walls and small openings (windows and doors) of the estate also contributed indirectly to the sensible use of water. A cooler interior meant less stress for stored food, animals and people. Shade reduced evaporation. Courtyards and outdoor work areas could be managed according to the season. The house adapted to the climate rather than fighting it head-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of the estate\u2019s cistern system to a specific period, as rainwater storage is one of the oldest solutions to life in the arid Mediterranean. The vernacular Ibizan estate, however, preserved this knowledge in a particularly coherent domestic form. In contemporary architecture, these ancient teachings are re-emerging under new names: passive cooling, bioclimatic design, low-impact landscaping. Rural builders in Ibiza were unfamiliar with these terms; nevertheless, the application of these principles and the experiences passed down from generation to generation led to the practical realisation of these concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Wells as places of work, memory and gathering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A well is one of the simplest architectural forms, yet in an arid landscape it takes on great social significance. In rural Ibiza, wells and springs were more than just sources of water. People also went there to water their animals, wash, meet up, exchange news and celebrate seasonal events. The act of drawing water involved repetition, effort and mutual dependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a world where pipes and pumps were not yet taken for granted, water fostered gatherings where travel, work and community life were organised. That combination of utility and significance is important. Scarce resources often take on ritual significance because daily life revolves around them. A farm situated near a reliable water source had a different value and status to one that depended entirely on seasonal rainfall. Land with access to groundwater could support livestock, orchards and vegetable plots. A household without such access had to rely more heavily on cisterns, careful storage and drought-resistant crops, limiting its options and leaving it more vulnerable to the periodic and unpredictable droughts of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The architecture of Ibiza\u2019s wells and springs also preserves traces of older Mediterranean forms. Blakstad described two common styles: one characterised by a pointed arch and a tunnel hewn out of the rock, and another in which an opening on level ground is protected by a small gabled chapel covering a staircase leading down to the underground reservoir. In the case of the <em>Font de Can Pere Musson<\/em>, Blakstad linked the shape of the pointed arch to forms known in <em>Canaan<\/em> during the first millennium BC and brought to the island by the Phoenicians. There may be very little of it for much of the year, and then suddenly too much when torrential rains arrive. Rain falling on dry, sloping ground can run off rapidly, carrying valuable and fertile soil with it. Traditional terraced fields solved this problem with dry stone, patience and perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ibiza\u2019s terraced landscape forms part of the same water management system as the wells and cisterns. The stone walls built along the hillsides created horizontal surfaces where crops could grow and the soil could be retained. They slowed down runoff, kept moisture in the soil for longer and reduced erosion. The island\u2019s Muslim era began in 902 AD, when Ibiza came to be known as <em>Y\u00e2bisa<\/em>, and the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ibiza.travel\/\">Official Ibiza Tourism Portal<\/a><\/strong> describes the Arab legacy as evident in agricultural systems such as <em>Ses Feixes<\/em> and <em>Es Broll de Buscastell<\/em>, where irrigation channels and ditches continue to reflect this hydraulic heritage. However, the terraces themselves should be regarded as part of a broader Mediterranean technique, rather than an exclusively Arab invention. For centuries, farmers in arid and mountainous landscapes have built retaining walls wherever it was necessary to retain soil and water. What the Islamic period seems to have contributed most significantly to Ibiza was not the isolated concept of a terrace, but rather the more systematic organisation of water, slopes, canals and cultivated plots to create productive agricultural landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Terraces are often regarded as picturesque remnants of a bygone agricultural past. In reality, they are a form of environmental engineering in which the walls counteract the force of gravity and each level allows more time for rainwater to seep into the soil. In this way, each terrace protects the one below it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Over generations, these systems have transformed rugged or fragile terrain into a mosaic of cultivated land. That is why landscapes featuring dry-stone walls deserve special attention in their own right. They are built testimonies to hard work, scarcity and observation. They show how people managed to make the island productive without heavy machinery, concrete canals or imported technologies. The material was already there: stones cleared from the fields, arranged into walls, shaped and preserved through their use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In Ibiza, water was often managed by holding it back rather than forcing it. The terrace is one of the clearest examples of that philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The Islamic legacy: irrigation, farming and water management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The history of water in Ibiza also spans the Islamic period, when the island was known as <em>Y\u00e2bisa<\/em>. Across much of <em>Al-Andalus<\/em> and the Balearic region, the agricultural expertise of the Muslims and Berbers transformed the landscape through irrigation, the construction of terraces, new crops and improved water distribution systems. The term \u2018acequia\u2019 itself derives from Arabic, and the wider Iberian tradition of irrigation channels owes much to Islamic hydraulic engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelosa.com\/blog\/en\/architecture\/the-ibicencan-garden-i-a-brief-history-guide\/\">Ibicencan gardens<\/a><\/strong> themselves reflect the importance of Muslim rule in the development of agricultural knowledge on the island, including terraces and irrigation systems. This influence must be approached with caution. The local remains and systems that have survived in Ibiza are not always as monumental or visible as those found in some parts of mainland Spain. Nevertheless, the broader historical context is relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Islamic period expanded the relationship between water and agriculture. Orchards and irrigated plots depended on careful water distribution. In arid regions, irrigation is never merely a technical matter. It has always been a social issue. It required rules, maintenance, shared labor and respect for the established order: who receives the water, when, for how long and by what right. Water had to be channeled, the land shaped and the right crops chosen for the climate. Agriculture depended on knowledge passed down through generations and across cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em>Ses Feixes<\/em> is a prime example: its canals not only irrigated the cultivated strips but also managed excess water and drainage, transforming a challenging wetland into arable land. Much of the wetland was channelled by the Arabs, who created a highly advanced irrigation system for its time, based on capillary irrigation. The canals, approximately one and a half to three metres wide, delineated small rectangular plots known as \u2018bancales\u2019. <em>Ses Feixes<\/em> means \u2018the strips\u2019, because the land was divided into long strips, each worked by a single farmer. The main channels, situated along the long sides of each bancal, were connected every few metres by underground channels known as fibles, at a depth of around 40\u201350 centimetres. Water flowed through these, rising by capillary action thanks to a porous covering, usually made from pine branches. In arid regions such as Mesopotamia, agriculture depended on rivers and canals, the construction and maintenance of which required sustained cooperation between different settlements. Some studies link this necessity to the emergence of institutions capable of organizing labor, collecting resources and distributing water. Over time, such structures may have fostered more stable agricultural production and, in certain contexts, a greater concentration of power. This interpretation, known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/research\/economic-origins-government-iraq\">the hydraulic hypothesi<\/a>s<\/strong>, remains a subject of debate and should not be understood as the sole explanation for the birth of the earliest civilizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Salinity: the problem of brackish water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The shortage of fresh water in Ibiza is exacerbated by salinity. In many parts of the island, water from wells and water used for irrigation can become brackish or saline, mainly due to the combined pressures of overuse, drought and the intrusion of seawater into coastal aquifers. For gardens, this poses a subtle but serious problem: even if water is available, it can damage the very plants it is supposed to nourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Salinity is also part of the island\u2019s long history of adaptation. Previous cultures did not necessarily solve this problem; rather, they learnt where water could be used, which crops tolerated the local conditions, and which areas were best suited to market gardens, grazing, salt production or settlement. The Islamic agricultural period is once again particularly relevant in this regard, as its systems focused on water distribution, drainage and soil management, rather than merely on extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelosa.com\/blog\/en\/landscape\/the-ibicencan-garden-models-of-adaptation\/\">The second article on Ibicencan gardens<\/a><\/strong> addresses this issue. Many plants suffer when watered with salty water, particularly during the summer. Winter and spring rains can dilute the accumulated salts, but the stress returns as the heat increases and watering intensifies. The article suggests collecting rainwater in cisterns and using drought- and salt-tolerant species as part of the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the strongest links between traditional knowledge and contemporary design. The most successful gardens tend to make use of native or Mediterranean species, shade, mulch, stone, careful watering and the rhythm of the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, this approach was inevitable: people planted whatever could survive. Almond, fig, carob, olive, vine, pomegranate, rosemary, lavender, juniper and pine trees are among the island\u2019s hardiest plants. Some provided food, whilst others supplied resin, timber, medicine, fragrance or protection from the wind. The garden was rarely separated from its practical purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Nowadays, Ibiza\u2019s most picturesque gardens tend to draw on this ancient wisdom in a refined way. They accept the summer drought as part of the character of the place and do not try to make their surroundings resemble anywhere else. Salinity teaches us a hard lesson: the quality of water is just as important as its quantity. A cistern and other traditional storage methods can be more valuable than a tap from which water flows with varying levels of salinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Modern villas and old lessons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The current property landscape in Ibiza has transformed the island\u2019s relationship with water. Private estates, detached homes, swimming pools, gardens and tourist infrastructure are driving up demand. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4441\/15\/24\/4317\">A 2023 study on rainwater harvesting in Ibiza<\/a><\/strong> notes that Mediterranean islands face challenges relating to freshwater, such as drought, groundwater scarcity and mass tourism, and that private estates disconnected from the water supply network account for a significant proportion of the island\u2019s freshwater demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This brings the old finca back into the spotlight. Its lessons are architectural, ecological and cultural. It teaches us that the comforts of modern life can be achieved through orientation, shade, massing, materials and storage. It teaches us that gardens must be adapted to their location, that rainwater must be taken into account, and that a house forms part of a wider system comprising the land, the slope, the soil and the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some contemporary renovations in Ibiza have already taken this on board. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelosa.com\/blog\/en\/unique-homes\/blakstad-design-finca-intuitive-match-of-traditional-and-modern\/\">The article on a finca designed by Blakstad<\/a><\/strong> describes how traditional flat roofs collect rainwater in cisterns, whilst thick walls and small windows help to regulate the temperature throughout the seasons. Its deepest value lies in preserving the building\u2019s ingenuity: how it captures, stores, provides shade, breathes and adapts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The same principle applies to new builds. A building that ignores water may continue to look beautiful for a while, but one that incorporates water is more deeply rooted in the island. It can make use of, among other things, native plants, permeable surfaces, rainwater harvesting alongside efficient irrigation, greywater strategies (where permitted), shaded courtyards, the use of cross-breezes and restored terraces. The result can be both luxurious and efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In Ibiza, sophistication increasingly means adaptability and efficiency in architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The beauty of restraint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ibiza\u2019s traditional architecture has often been admired by visitors. Modernist architects saw in the finca a purity of form: white cubes, simple volumes, authentic materials, and a lack of ornamentation. Artists, designers and travellers have continued to interpret the island through this visual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">However, the deeper story lies beneath the surface. The white colour reflected heat and protected the walls. The small windows kept the interiors cool. The flat roof collected rainwater and dried produce. The cistern stored what was needed for survival. The terraced fields retained the soil and slowed the flow of water. The well brought people together. The vegetable garden balanced food, shade and resilience, whilst accepting drought as a fact of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the architecture of water is one of the most important yet overlooked themes. It links the island\u2019s houses to its geology, its agriculture, its heritage, its rural society, and even to its current challenges in terms of sustainability. Perhaps it also helps to explain why traditional Ibizan architecture continues to convey such power, and why its modern adaptation has re-emerged as a clear trend over the last two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of Ibiza\u2019s great historical narratives: the Phoenician, Punic, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Islamic, Catalan and modern layers have all left their mark on the island without completely erasing what came before. Practices relating to water form part of this layered history. The Phoenician settlers established themselves near the springs; Roman and Punic Ibiza expanded the island\u2019s urban and agricultural life; the Islamic period organised water management through canals, terraces and strips of cultivated land; later, rural families maintained cisterns, wells, flat roofs and dry-stone fields as part of their everyday farm life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No single layer on its own explains the entire system. Its strength lies in continuity: each era inherited the same arid island and had to respond to it using the tools, beliefs and technologies available. The ancient builders of Ibiza did not idealise scarcity. Their houses and landscapes reflect a cumulative and practical intelligence.
